When our girls were born (they are now 13 and 14) the must have book for parents was the What to Expect series.  Much has changed since our girls were born and I was curious what is new and especially what is the new must have book for parents of toddlers and babies.  I knew there had to be something!

Then I was sent this book and knew it must be it! Baby and Toddler Basics: Expert Answers to Parents’ Top 150 Questions.

must have book for parents @ad

It is written by Tanya Altmann who is both the author and a spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The book is laid out in chapters with questions, advice and bonus tips from Tanya throughout.  It has the most recent information on topics like “Do I really need to give medicine for a fever?” Or “What is the appropriate amount of Acetaminophen to give?”.

I put the book to the test by looking up a few of the questions we’d had over the course of raising our 4 kids.

Like the ever allusive tummy ache.  How many times kids have complained that their tummy hurts.  They are young enough you know it hurts, and maybe sometimes there are tears.  But is it something more?  Do we need to call the doctor?  The book gives great advice on this topic, like keeping a food diary to see if perhaps there is a certain food, or food group, triggering these tummy aches.  It goes through a list of questions to ask yourselves (or the doctor).

I was pleased with the content of every question I looked up.  It was informative, without being overly basic.  It felt valuable to me, even as a quite seasoned parent and I KNOW would be invaluable to new/expectant parents as well.

Summer is in full swing and we are enjoying it! Thanks to Smockingbird children’s clothing, Little Miss has been having fun in style.  Smockingbird is an affordable classic children’s clothing line featuring smocked clothing for girls and boys. They have everything from dresses and rompers to long johns and bathing suits.  I was super excited to receive a few pieces from them, including something from their summer swimwear line.

I let Little Miss pick out which outfits she’d like.  I wasn’t surprised at all that her first choice was this super cute Horses Smocked Gingham Shorts Set, since she loves horses!

I love the design of this outfit!  It’s so pretty and perfect for summer.

The cute pink and white gingham shorts match the fabric covered buttons on the top as well and the edging on the smocked section.  The little ruffles on the legs of the shorts are a sweet touch. 20160626_120545

The criss cross back and flutter sleeves are adorable!

It fit A really well and she was able to run, jump, and play comfortably, all afternoon.

A has really been into dresses lately.  She loves to put them on and twirl, so the Hula Hooping Girls Smocked Dress is perfect for her!

This pretty dress features angel sleeve sand rick rack trim.  I love the bright primary colors in the dress.  The classic design is timeless and one of my absolute favorites.  It’s simple but beautiful.

And what is summertime without a new bathing suit?  A picked out this sweet Aqua and Red Gingham Seersucker swimsuit.  We chose to have it monogrammed.

20160625_153456

I absolutely love it and we have gotten so many compliments on it!  The red monogramming is the perfect compliment to the light blue gingham.  I am especially pleased with the cut and design of this suit.  We bought a swimsuit for A a couple of months ago and I wasn’t pleased with the cut of the back of it.  A is on the small side and the suit still didn’t cover her little bottom completely.  This suit has great coverage and the sweet ruffles around the legs add even more.  It didn’t ride up the first time even after hours of jumping into the pool and climbing on and off of floats.

20160625_172452 20160625_172512

The back of the suit has a wide elastic section.  It was a little big on A but I expected it since like I mentioned, she’s on the small side.  She’s actually between a size 3T and 4T so I ordered the 4T, hoping she may be able to wear it again next summer.  The halter straps tie at the neck.  There are no criss cross shoulder straps to deal with so we can easily and quickly use the potty.

Little Miss loves her new outfits and so do I!  The quality is excellent and everything has held up great in the wash.  I was very impressed with the huge selection Smockingbird offers.  The sizes range from infants to children’s 6 and monogramming is available both on swimsuits and most of the Smockingbird line.  I highly recommend checking out all they have to offer!  Make sure to connect with them on Facebook, where you’ll find special discount codes and pre-order info.  You can also find giveaways on their Instagram page.

Even now, I can still remember that feeling my husband and I had when we learned we were expecting our first child together.  Pure happiness, excitement, joy, amazement and so much more all wrapped into just a few moments as we celebrated and pondered the little miracle already growing inside me.  It was one of the best moments of our lives.  Shortly after the initial excitement and celebration, the questions began.  Would we breastfeed or bottle feed?  Did we want a jogging stroller or a regular stroller.  Did we want a soft structure carrier or a wrap?  Nightgowns with footies or zip up sleep sacks?  It seemed like a never ending stream of questions and decisions.  Like most parents, we only wanted what was best for this child and what worked best for our family.  After having our first, it was a little easier to answer those questions and make those decisions as we learned, grew and discovered what was unique about each of our children.  We now have four children and our baby is now 2.  One struggle we had with Jack, threw us for a loop.  With the girls and Benjamin we pretty much chose whatever baby wipes we wanted.  Which ones had the best price, was usually the determining factor.  But with Jack, he was prone to rashes and after trying multiple things, I realized the culprit was the baby wipes.  Thus began my quest for the most natural baby wipes I could find.  I tried some DIY baby wipes, but he still broke out in a rash from those.  Then I discovered a brand carried at our local Meijer called WaterWipes.

WaterWipes were our chemical free solution for Jack.  In fact, they contain EXACTLY two ingredients; water and grapefruit seed extract.  To be precise these chemical free wipes contain 99.9% purified water and .1% grapefruit seed extract.  And yes, they do clean his bottom well and he has had no rashes since we switched over to WaterWipes.

The only thing I found to be a downside is that these are not interfolded like other wipes are.  The reason is so they stay sterile.  But it just means you should not transfer to them to another container.  Not a big deal for us, but some might find it difficult.

If you are a parent, perhaps even a first time parent; I know the questions may seem endless and overwhelming.  Set your mind at ease and choose the chemical free wipes that are affordable, eliminated Jack’s rashes and are a safer option for your children.  You can easily locate WaterWipes at your local Meijer by using their store locator.

I would love to hear what questions you have had as a parent and what solutions are working for you!

We have moved the girls rooms around. Our bigger E’s took over what was the nursery and baby E moved into what was the office. Our older E’s quickly moved in and redecorated making the room more “girly” and not so baby. However, they ended up using a lot of the nursery decorations I had made just by tweaking them a bit. That left baby E with a very bare room. It is kinda sad looking!

The other day I was on Etsy….one of my happy place lol. I came across ChicWallArt.

I love all the wall prints they have. They are so whimsical and childish…. exactly what I was looking for

When planning room decor for my E’s I always look for wall hangings that are either encouraging, empowering or guiding.

Ignore the paint smudges all over the table lol we are a painting family. These are the prints I received from ChicWallArt and I so excited to put them up in baby E’s room. Not only do the colors go perfectly but   words on them represent my heart.

ChicWallArt is offering 20% off right now to our readers when you use the code:MUDPIE20

Also don’t leave with out entering to win ANY collection from their etsy site!!! Winners choice! This is such an awesome giveaway don’t miss out.

When I contacted ChicWallArt I learned very quickly that they were more then just a company. I learned that they had a story as a family, a very powerful and encouraging story. Take a minute and click on the link below to watch this family’s story…… You may want to keep the tissues close.

Little Miss has followed in her big brothers’ footsteps with her love of books.  The other day, I heard her talking from another room.  She was repeating the same phrase over and over.  I quietly walked down the hall and found her sitting on the potty “reading” a book.  I love that they enjoy reading so much and I’m always on the lookout for fun books for them to enjoy.  When I saw All These Things by Susie Poole on the Family Christian website, I knew it would be perfect for Little Miss!

P_20150415_155736

This sweet board book is based on 1 Corinthians 13 and talks about how love is more than just hugs and kisses.  It tells how you can also show love through sharing and obeying among other things as well as being kind and patient.  It’s written in a very age appropriate way that young children can understand and relate too.  I LOVED the illustrations!  The were so cute and engage little ones.

P_20150415_155848

I liked that the book tied all the ideas into God’s word and principles and promotes a loving, giving spirit.  Little Miss couldn’t wait to share the book with my husband.  She climbed up in bed to “read” it to him.

P_20150415_160001 P_20150415_160012

I couldn’t help but smile as A flipped through the book.  After she was done, her daddy read it to her.  She now wants to read it every night before bed.  Not only do we get to share some special time together, she’s also learning about God’s love and nothing is better than that!

One lucky reader will receive a $10 Family Christian gift certificate so they can buy the book, or anything else for themselves!
