Our oldest daughter just turned 11!  Somehow, I just don’t feel old enough to have an 11 year old child.  But it’s true!  As they grow up, the time when they will be active on Social Media is rapidly drawing close.  As parents we have established several household rules to protect our children on the internet.  For example, no one in our home uses computers anywhere except for the living room or dining room area.  However, it seems every few months, the news releases a story about a new and scary app or another way predators are trying to get to kids.  It truly seems overwhelming.  BGCA is taking strides to ensure that parents are aware of the dangers of the internet.  Their new Cyber Safe site is filled with great information for parents.  They have a quiz where you answer questions in regards to your knowledge about internet safety for your kids.  I am proud to say that I am Cyber Survivor!  There is even a section of their site dedicated you asking questions.  It is called “Ask the Cyber Tribe“.  Once there, you have the option of submitting a question.  I asked a few questions and will definitely be looking to see if mine get answered.  As a bonus, if you ask a question and submit it, you will be entered to win an iPad mini and $500 to the Boys & Girls Club of your choice!

I would love to know what you do to keep your kids safe online.  Are you proactive in keeping them safe?  Do you just assume your kids stay safe?  Or do you just let them do their own thing?  I’d love for you to chime in below and get some conversation going!

My friends who have kids keep a close eye on what their kids are doing on the computer and do not leave them to their own devices, no way!

My son is 11 when he is online I try and keep track of what he is doing but I rarely let him online at all. I will have to check out the Cyber Safe site.
