Wow. So I really did not want to write this blog post, but I called Belinda and she said, “Go for it!” so here it is.  For quite awhile I have known that we were not eating very healthy.  Sure, we’d eat veggies, fruits, salads and use whole wheat pastas/breads.  But I knew we were eating a lot of empty calories and I was not paying very much attention to labels.  This week we decided it had to stop.  Our baby boy is starting in on his first feedings, our 2 year old asks for snacks…a lot and our oldest girls are getting to the age where they notice how we eat.  Because we make sure the kids get their fruits and veggies.

My husband and I discussed it and we decided to eliminate most processed foods from our diets.  Now, I want to state a few things up front.  The “green” community can be pretty aggressive at times.  I consider our family to be ecofriendly…but not militant.  We use cloth diapers, we do our own compost, we have a garden, we can our produce, we recycle and we reuse when possible.  But not all of our napkins are cloth.  Sometimes we use disposable diapers when we travel.  Some of my favorite cleaners are loaded with chemicals and I am fine with that!  I can readily appreciate people who have made commitments to be 100% green, but that is not what works for us and that is ok!  So you will never find me saying we have eliminated ALL processed foods and you WILL see me blog about getting the occasional meal from Chick-Fil-A or using real bleach to clean.

All that being said, here is what does work for us at this point in our lives.

We buy fresh produce, raw sugar and generally all-natural foods.  I am making an attempt to make our beans from dry beans.  Today I made a huge pot of black beans and those black beans are worked into 4 of our dinners this week: burritos, salads, veggie burgers and homemade salsa!  I wanted Mexican Rice, so I found a natural recipe and my own.  We are eating pizza with freshly grated, truly natural cheese and fresh veggies.  I will be making the pizza crust from scratch. The recipe I am trying will take about 2-3 hours so I have to plan ahead.  The overall goal is to be more intentional.  We have gotten rid of our crackers and other processed items.  And eating more of this:

salad

I don’t want to overwhelm myself so we are making a gradual transition.  The next week or two is about getting rid of artificial sweeteners and processed items.  Next I would like to make our own breads, buns and tortilla shells.  I would love to make our own salad dressings as well.  This is not about making some quick change or a diet.  This is about a lifestyle we hope to adopt and making changes that fit for our family.  We want to be healthy for our kids and we want our kids to have a balanced perspective on food.  We want them to love good, natural, healthy foods and we want them to relax and enjoy homemade cookies or a night out at a restaurant too.  It’s all about balance and moderation.

One more personal goal I have made is to get back into running.  This past weekend I took our girls to a race.

race

The oldest ran a 5k and the youngest a one mile.  Next year, I want to run the 5k as a family.  Well, minus the baby. LOL! He can ride in a stroller.

I will keep blogging a bit about this transition and what works and what doesn’t  Feel free to ask questions, share advice or offer some encouragement to me.

Thank you Zing Anything for sending me a Citrus Zinger to review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Fact. Water is very good for us.  Fact.  It can often be difficult to drink the recommended amount of water each day.  For myself, I drink water with lunch and dinner and one bottle during the day.  However, in the evening I crave diet soda.  What I needed was a new way to drink water.  One day was looking around online I found Zing Anything.  I contacted them and they agreed to send me a Citrus Zinger.

This is definitely a new way to drink water and it is easy, delicious and fun.  How does it work?  You select what natural flavor you would like added to your water.  Pick whatever you love! We chose lemon for our first bottle because we all love homemade lemonade.  Simply slice the fruit and place it in the bottom of your citrus zinger.  There is a built in juicer so you can squeeze the natural juices straight into the bottle.  The top of the bottle has a wide opening to allow for you to fill it easily with ice and water.  You can also add berries or another fruit in the bottom of the bottle.  There is a strainer to keep the seeds from entering the bottle.  After that you are ready to drink up some naturally flavored water.

Our daughter LOVED it! My favorite flavor so far has been lemon-lime.  I like to let it sit in the fridge for a few hours and then take it outside with me when I work in the garden. It is so yummy!  An added benefit is the Vitamin C and other nutrients you get from the real, fresh fruit.

Zing Anything has other zingers as well.  I have seriously been researching salad dressings and would love to make our own.  I wish I had a Salad Zinger so I could make our own dressing to put on the fresh lettuce and spinach we are harvesting from our garden.

I received a MyAllergy Test kit to facilitate this review.  As always follow all instructions carefully and always consult with your doctor before making any changes. All opinions are my own.

It seems like our family has allergies.  Mine used to be pretty severe but it appears that I have grown out of them.  I started really getting allergies in high school.  They were moderate then.  Very itchy, eyes, ears, nose and throat.  However, we moved up north to Michigan and my allergies exploded.  I ended up at an allergy doctor trying to find some relief.  I ended up (seasonally) on two oral medicines, eye drops, an inhaler and nose spray.  I hated it! I don’t like taking medicines and this was so extreme.  Thankfully they were just Spring allergies and I have grown out of them.  All of our kids seem to have minor allergies as well.  Nothing real major, just sneezing and some itchy eyes when certain trees bloom.  One daughter is allergic to adhesive so she cannot use bandaids or medical tape.  There is a new product though to help you learn more about allergies you may, or may not, have.  It is called My Allergy Test and it allows you to do allergy testing at home!

my allergy test

This test is remarkably easy to use and will test for the 10 most common allergies.  We tried it on our oldest daughter as she seems most affected by seasonal allergies…swollen, itchy eyes and a persistent cough for several weeks each Spring.  My Allergy Test kit included everything we needed to get her blood sample.

my allergy test

After we labeled it and placed it into the provided envelope we put it out with our mail.  A few weeks later I received an email letting me know that she did not appear to be allergic to any of those things except a very minor reaction to mold.

Thank you Vitacost for sending us these items to review.  All opinions are 100% our own.

Belinda and I both strive to make healthy choices for our families.  Since she has 6 kids and I have 4 kids, it can be difficult for us to find time to shop for new, healthy items.  Especially for me.  Where I live, we are 45 minutes away from the closest big city.  We do not have access to health food stores that are close by.  Thankfully companies like Vitacost offer a great alternative.  You can order many healthy foods and supplies from them.  I was sent a few items to try with my family.

Organic Fruit Strips

This was the kids favorite.  The Pure Organic Fruit and Veggies strips check in at just 50 calories per strip.  They are a healthy alternative to fruit roll ups.  All the kids loved these and we have plans to order more.

My favorite item was the Himalania Fine Pink Salt.

Pink salt

I enjoyed adding this salt to my homemade fries recently and it did a great job.  The Himalania Pink Salt from Vitacost is 100% and free from additives.

Our toddler’s choice of items was the kids gummy vitamins.

Vitamins for kids

All 3 big kids will eat them but our toddler LOVES them.  After he eats his vitamin he wants another.  Now he understands that he gets one a day so after he eats it he sighs and says, “That ok. Next I get another one Mommy.”

Belinda’s Take:

I received some products to try out as well.

My kids loved the Fruit and Veggie Strips as well.  Not only are they tasty, each one counts as 2/3 of a serving of fruits and veggies combined!

My 12-year old’s favorite was the Fruit Sandwich made from pineapple and passion fruit.  It had a nice  sweet but tangy flavor.

The Multi-Vitamin Gummies were a huge hit!  We’ve used chewable vitamins in the past but the kids didn’t care for the chalky taste.  These were yummy and the kids came to me to remind me that it was time for one!  My boys are big into dinosaurs so they really liked the fun dino shapes.

My favorite was the Himalalnia Dark Chocolate Gogui Berries.

They were SO good!  I like to have a little something sweet before bed so these were perfect!  Not only do I get a fix for my sweet tooth, but I’m also getting the benefits of the antioxidants in the dark chocolate and the gogi berries.  They’re a yummy treat I can feel good about!  Infact, that’s how I feel about all of the items I tried.  Foods that taste great and are good for us!

I received the information about iron supplements from a PR agency.  No compensation was received but I believe the information is valuable to our readers.

These days, most women are juggling so much, and their lives are busy and complicated with work and family, so we’re all fatigued to an extent!  It’s only Monday and I am already starting this week off tired.  We had company all weekend, celebrated our daughter’s 10th birthday, I have done 6 loads of laundry, made two batches of homemade granola and done some work in the garden.  But when fatigue starts to interfere with living your life, that’s when you have to start looking for an underlying cause. It’s not something to be ignored or considered ‘normal’ because of a busy life.

A Harris Survey, conducted in March 2013 for Feosol iron supplements, found that 42% women with unexplained fatigue have difficulty concentrating.

·         Iron deficiency-related anemia is one of the primary causes of fatigue in adult and teen women since many of us don’t get adequate iron from our diets alone.

·         Iron-deficiency anemia can be mediated by taking the proper amount of iron supplements, such as the kind in Feosol® Complete with Bifera® which contains both heme and non-heme iron for enhanced absorption while minimizing side effects, and can be taken with or without food.  Improving your diet can also help mediate iron-deficiency anemia.

·         Unexplained fatigue that impacts your life should never be self-diagnosed and requires the attention of a healthcare professional.  The fix might be as easy as taking a daily supplement or adjusting your diet, so don’t be afraid to investigate what is causing your fatigue.

As always you should discuss any supplements with your doctor and always follow the exact dosage amounts and instructions properly.

If you are interested in iron supplements then enter below for a chance to win a bottle of iron supplements from Feosol.
