Groceries that is. A few months ago we caught an episode of TLC’s show called Extreme Cheapskates. If you click that link you can watch a video about a guy and a goat’s head. Interesting huh? While I found many of their techniques appalling, embarrassing and a too extreme, there was one helpful tip my husband and I have incorporated into our family. One of the people featured on the show said they had a “no buy” week. They do not spend ANY money on that week. No gas, no food, nothing. We decided to try and do this once a month but within reason. First off, we have kids at home. So we have to buy milk, bread and some fresh produce. Also, while we did not spend any money on eating out or shopping my husband did have to put gas in his car because he needed it! LOL! So, like I said, we tweeked it a little but it did save us a weeks worth of groceries plus we did not pick up any little purchases like we might typically buy. How did we fare? Did we eat healthy? (Disclaimer: We did buy a bag of apples, a bunch of bananas, 1 loaf of bread and milk…a total of about $20…all other ingredients came from what we already had at home)
Leftover potatoes were made into homemade potatoe soup.
When we have fruit that is getting ready to go bad, I try and either use it or freeze it. One night I used frozen blueberries to make Blueberry Waffles!
One night we had grilled chicken and I used more potatoes to make homemade french fries. I saved our leftover grilled chicken and made delicious whole wheat wraps!
I did not think it was the easiest thing in the world to do, but we ate plenty, ate at least somewhat healthy AND it really helps clear out your pantry and freezer. I enjoyed the challenge on my cooking skills too. This coming week is our next no buy week and I am anxious to see how we do.
What about you? Would you try this? What ways do you try and save?
